Details

This is terribly late. I have no excuse for it; it was just a combination of forgetfulness and laziness on my part. I should have had this done no later than the week after Nor’Easter.

This year’s Nor’Easter was marked by the fact that not everyone played in every round. Some sat out one of the middle round; others left early, and so on. However, I have applied Russ Gifford’s rules to the results. Russ’ rules for ranking the people with the same number of wins are:

  1. Head-to-head competition.
  2. Results of play against the same opponent.
  3. The scores of the opponent’s you defeated.
  4. The scores of all the opponents’ who defeated you.

These apply in order, so if player A beat player B, A would be ranked higher than B no matter what rules 2, 3, and 4 say.

N.B.: These are independent from Vic Provost’s announced winners. They used a different system and should not be compared.

Five Wins

The "five wins" category is easy: no one won all five rounds.

Four Wins

This is another easy category. Allen Loiselle is the only person with four wins, so he is #1 according to this system.

Three Wins

Finally there is some work to do. There are four people with three wins: Andrew Howard, Jim Torkelson, John Droescher, and Ralph McDonald. Applying rule #1, John beat Ralph. Rule #2 shows that Jim beat Rob Seulowitz and Rob Seulowitz beat Andrew. So John will be ranked higher than Ralph, and Jim higher than Andrew will.

Rule #3 shows that Andrew defeated people with 3 wins, Jim 5, John 8, and Ralph 5. These don’t contradict the previous rules, so John is #2 and Andrew is #5. This still leaves Jim and Ralph to be compared with rule #4. Jim lost to people with 1 win, and Ralph 3. So Ralph is #3 and Jim #4.

Two Wins

There are seven people with two wins: Chris Kavanaugh, Jim Manfredi, Mike Allexenberg, Randy Knight, Rob Seulowitz, Tom Morin, and Vic Provost.

Rule #1: Rob beat Mike, Mike beat Randy, Randy beat Chris, Chris beat Vic, and Jim beat Tom. So the partial rankings are (Rob, Mike, Randy, Chris, Vic) and (Jim, Tom). No matter what else, these orders will not change.

Rule #2 doesn’t help, while a few pairs of people played the same opponent, they either both won or both lost.

Rule #3: Rob defeated people with 5 wins, Mike 3, Randy 2, Chris 3, Vic 2, Jim 3, and Tom 1. Rob is #6 and Tom is #12. Jim with 3 is ranked higher that Randy with 2, so he is also above Chris and Vic. Randy is #9, Chris is #10 and Vic is #11.

Rule #4: Mike lost to people with 6 wins, and Jim 3. So Mike is #7 and Jim #8.

One Win

Eight people had one win: Bob Walden, Brian Sullivan, Carl Nogueira, Charlie Hamilton, David Krishfield, Michael Pierzchala, Stephen Johns and Tom Ruta.

Rule #1: Stephen beat Michael, Michael beat Charlie, Charlie beat Brian, and Tom beat Brian. So the partial rankings are (Stephen, Michael, Charlie, Brian) and (Tom, Brian).

Rule #2: Carl beat Jim Torkelson and Jim Torkelson beat Brian. This adds (Carl, Brian).

Rule #3: Bob beat a person with 0 wins, Brian 0, Carl 3, Charlie 1, David 0, Michael 1, Stephen 1, and Tom 1. This puts Carl at #13, but still have to resolve where Tom fits in against (Stephen, Michael, Charlie), and Bob, Brian, and David.

Rule #4: Tom lost to people with 3 wins, Stephen 6, Michael 3, and Charlie 6. So Tom is tied with Michael at #15, Stephen is #14 and Charlie is #17. Bob lost to people with 7 wins, Brian 8, and David 0. So Brian is #18, Bob #19, and David #20.

No Wins

Three people had no wins: Andrew Young, Joseph Gochinski, and Scott Romanowski.

Rule #1: No players won.

Rule #2: No pairs played the same opponent.

Rule #2: No one won a game, so everyone gets a 0 here.

Rule #3: Andrew lost to people with 3 wins, Joseph 4, and Scott 3. So Joseph is #21 and Andrew and Scott are tied for #22.
